Yoga is a system of personal development encompassing mind, body and spirit
originating in India thousands of years ago.
The beauty of Yoga is that it's accessible to everyone irregardless of age, gender, physical condition and circumstance. It doesn't require investment in expensive clothing and equipment or vast amounts of space, just a genuine willingness and openess to learn and discover more about ourselves.
Yoga is non-competitive and it really does not matter whether you can or can't reach your toes! Yoga does improve flexibility with time, however has much more to offer to help us feel healthier, deepen breathing, improve posture, calm and clear the mind, and ultimately lead towards self-realisation.
Yoga is excellent for mobilising the spine, stretching muscles and ligaments, improving digestion and circulation, improving gland function and restoring balance to the nervous system (often overloaded due to our stressful lifestyles).
Practice can include:
Asana: physical postures of yoga
Pranayama: breathing/breath control
Concentration techiques: to focus the mind and still thoughts
Meditation: to free the mind and lead towards self-realisation
Yoga Nidra: a very deep relaxation
Mantras: sacred sounds to concentrate/focus the mind, induce healing in the body.
